Tell us about your graduate rotations in a nutshell
My first year in the Jetstar Graduate Program has been a whirlwind, with opportunities to explore rotations across both operational and commercial business areas.
I began my Jetstar career journey with a rotation in the Ancillary Revenue Team, taking a deep-dive into the world of product management and marketing. This rotation was unique as it allowed me to contribute to the development of many different products, including baggage, media, partnerships, Club Jetstar, sustainability, in-flight retail, in-flight entertainment and more. The large scope of this rotation resulted in highly varied work, an ocean of learning experiences, as well as opportunities to take ownership over meaningful business projects spanning each product.
My next rotation in Operational Delivery was a leap out of my comfort zone. It was outside the customer and commercial division which I had become accustomed to. With no background in aviation prior to joining the Jetstar Graduate Program, I was exposed to a whole new world: gaining incredible insights into what it takes for an airline to run on a daily basis. This rotation was dynamic and fast moving. I quickly learnt how to adapt to an ever-changing business environment, problem-solving for operational issues and trading-off priorities between different departments.
A world of opportunity awaits our grads. Any key highlights?
In my first year, I’ve been able to engage with countless personal and professional development opportunities unique to the Jetstar Graduate Program. From airport volunteering, to collaborating with overseas teams, to working with business partners, I’m incredibly grateful that Jetstar invests in a fulfilling graduate experience.
To start with, I’ve been part of baggage handling and engineering hangar tours, as well as volunteered alongside our airport customer service agents; these hands-on experiences have opened my perspective on what it takes to work on the frontline of an airline.
Another incredible opportunity is visiting Singapore and Japan to collaborate on social media ideation workshops with our teams in both countries. It was highly insightful to learn about different working cultures, and to take this account when developing social media ideas and briefs.
Finally, I’d like to highlight how Jetstar’s flat organisational structure has given me with the opportunity to work directly with senior leaders on a business development project. I’ve been able to learn through observation, but also taken onboard invaluable personal feedback that’s helped me better navigate a fast-moving workplace.
What's something that stood out on the journey?
One thing that stands out to me about the Jetstar Graduate Program is the trust that the business has in its graduates. We lead projects and contribute to work that has a tangible business impact. Throughout my rotations, I’ve been empowered to take onboard larger projects and greater responsibility: once again, stepping outside my comfort zone. For instance, I’ve been able to work with an external organisation to launch a white label website, develop and release requests for information, and contribute to a sustainability presentation that was showcased at an executive level. The Jetstar Graduate Program goes above and beyond entry level, with enriching work that drives professional development.
Any advice for future graduates?
If you’re open-minded, enthusiastic and love a fast-paced environment, then I’d highly encourage you to apply! It’s a challenging yet rewarding experience where you’ll be involved in meaningful work, continuous problem-solving and learning across every wing of the business.
Having a can-do attitude with a willingness to take onboard opportunities that arise will do you wonders. Best of luck!
